Ohio University has thousands of rooms across its Athens campus. Exactly one of them has been taken permanently out of service, and the reason has nothing to do with plumbing.
Room 428 in Wilson Hall sits on the fourth floor of a residence hall on the university’s West Green. The door does not open to students. It has not for decades.
Wilson Hall is the single most repeated ghost story in a town that has more of them than anywhere else in Ohio. It is also the place where the town’s strangest claim comes to a point, because according to local legend the building sits at the exact centre of a ring of cemeteries.
What follows separates the documented history from the folklore, because in Athens the two have been tangled together for a very long time.
Historical Background
Wilson Hall opened in 1964 as part of the postwar expansion of Ohio University’s West Green, and is named for Hiram Wilson, a former student of the university.
It is a conventional mid century residence hall. There is nothing gothic about it, no Victorian tower, no long history of tragedy built into the architecture. It is a plain brick dormitory from the 1960s.
That is worth stating plainly, because it makes Wilson Hall unusual among famous haunted buildings. Most earn their reputation partly through atmosphere. This one earned it entirely through what students say happened inside.

The most commonly repeated account is footsteps heard from inside the sealed room at night, by students in neighbouring rooms who know it is empty and locked.
Objects moving is the second recurring theme. Students have described items leaving shelves and striking walls, and doors opening and closing repeatedly with no one there.
From outside the building, residents and passers by have reported seeing a figure standing at the fourth floor window of a room that nobody occupies.

Ghost Stories and Reports
The stories attached to Room 428 come in several versions, and they contradict each other in ways worth being honest about.
The most widely circulated account holds that a student died in the room in the 1970s. Accounts differ on almost every detail, including whether the student was male or female and what actually happened.
A second version adds that a later resident chose the room deliberately because of what she felt there, and used it for occult practice before dying in circumstances that were again never agreed upon.
These accounts are folklore. They have been retold by students for fifty years, they change with each retelling, and no version of them should be treated as established fact. What is not in dispute is that the room was taken out of use and has stayed that way.

Wilson Hall is an active student residence. It is not a museum, not a tour site, and not open to the public. Residence halls at Ohio University are card access buildings with genuine security expectations.
You can walk the West Green and see the building from outside without any issue. That is the extent of legitimate public access.
Do not attempt to enter, do not follow residents through doors, and do not go looking for the fourth floor. Students live there, and their privacy matters more than a ghost story.
Best Time to Visit
If you are viewing the exterior, autumn is the obvious season, and Athens in October is genuinely atmospheric.
Be aware that Athens Halloween is a large and well known street event that draws enormous crowds into the town. It is a spectacle in its own right, but it is not a quiet night for anything else.
University breaks are the quietest time on campus, though the West Green is also at its least interesting when the students are gone.

Wilson Hall appears constantly on lists of haunted American campuses, and Ohio University’s reputation is a genuine draw for paranormal interest.
Formal investigation, however, is close to impossible here. It is an occupied residence hall, and the university does not open it for that purpose.
What exists instead is fifty years of student testimony, which is abundant but entirely uncontrolled. Nobody has ever run an instrumented investigation inside Room 428 and published results.
Local Legends and Myths
The best known Athens legend places Wilson Hall at the centre of a pentagram formed by cemeteries ringing the town, with the building as the vortex.
It is a wonderful story and it does not survive scrutiny. Sources cannot even agree on which cemeteries are involved. One list gives Simms, Hanning, Cuckler, Higgins and Zion. Another gives Hanning, Hunter, Mathany, Peach Ridge and Simms.
Athens County contains well over a hundred named cemeteries. With that many points scattered around a town, you can draw a rough five pointed shape through almost any part of it, which is exactly why the claim keeps working.
The other claim repeated everywhere is that the British Society for Psychical Research named Athens one of the most haunted places in the world. No verifiable source for this has ever surfaced. Treat it as folklore.
